Roy Hodgson has named his provisional 26-man squad for England’s upcoming friendlies and Euro 2016 Championship in France.

Surprise inclusions are Fabian Delph, Andros Townsend, Jack Wilshere and Marcus Rashford, as Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Theo Walcott and Jermain Defoe miss out.

Hodgson’s provisional squad includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eleven midfielders and five strikers. England now face three friendly matches against Turkey (22nd May), Australia (27th May) and Portugal (2nd June) before Hodgson cuts his squad down to the final 23 players who will travel to France for Euro 2016.

In the goalkeeping department Jack Butland misses out through injury, meaning Joe Hart will retain England’s number one jersey with Southampton’s Fraser Forster and Burnley’s Tom Heaton as his understudies.

In defence, four full-backs and three centre backs have been included as Everton’s Phil Jagielka misses out through injury, alongside Leighton Baines who has been left out in favour of Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker and Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne get the nod, as Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones make up the defence.

England’s biggest surprises come in midfield as Hodgson selects Jack Wilshere, despite only starting one game for Arsenal this season after an injury hit season. Fabian Delph is also named after an underwhelming first season at Manchester City as Andros Townsend’s recent good run of form for relegated Newcastle United earns him a place in the squad.

Danny Drinkwater has also been included following his fascinating title winning season at Leicester City. Spurs duo Dele Alli and Eric Dier make the squad as Raheem Sterling keeps his place despite an inconsistent season at Manchester City. Merseysiders Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson and James Milner make up the midfield as West Ham’s Mark Noble misses out on a call-up after an impressive season at West Ham United.

In attack, Jermain Defoe, Theo Walcott and Andy Carroll all miss out as Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford earns a surprise place among the five striking options. Captain Wayne Rooney, golden boot winner Harry Kane and 24 goal man, Jamie Vardy were all certain to be included, as Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge is the fifth Liverpool player to be named in the provisional squad after impressing since his return from injury for Liverpool.
